Ankeny's two aquatic centers open Saturday for a three-day Memorial Day preview — then close again until May 30. Forecast: 81° Sunday, 85° Memorial Day Monday. Translation: you've got the perfect weekend handed to you on a tray. Let's roll. 🚲

🏊 The pools open Saturday. Then they close.

Cascade Falls (2350 SW Prairie Trail Dr.) and Prairie Ridge (1220 NW Prairie Ridge Dr.) will be open Saturday, May 23 through Memorial Day, Monday, May 25 — weather permitting. Then both close for almost a week before the full 2026 season officially begins Saturday, May 30 and runs through early September.

It's basically a three-day sneak preview, and the timing is excellent. Today is mostly cloudy and breezy; tonight a small chance of overnight thunderstorms before things clear. Saturday cleans up by afternoon. Sunday and Monday are sunny, calm, and warm — the kind of weekend you regret if you spend it on the couch.

🍔 Weekend Restaurant Pick: Trailside Tap

If you're going to be on the trail this weekend — or near it — Trailside Tap (710 SW 3rd St., Uptown) is the obvious move. The patio sits at the south end of the High Trestle Trail, the beer list is long, and they open at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday for breakfast hours, then keep pouring until 9 p.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. Sunday.

The other reason to go this weekend: it's still the small Trailside. The city has already cleared the path for an expansion that would nearly quadruple the footprint. Once that breaks ground, the patio you know is going to look different.

🧽 Local Business Spotlight: The Ankeny detailer who'll come to your driveway

Zach Himes detailed cars his whole life before his wife pushed him to do it for money. Cyclone Shine Shop is the result — opened recently out of his garage at 2704 NW 27th St. Unlike most detailers, he'll come to your driveway for the interior work.

Himes calls himself "a bit of OCD," which he means as a feature, not a bug. The pitch: he treats every job like it's his own car, and he gets visibly excited about pulling swirl marks out of paint. "Seeing something that's dirty and needs a good cleaning, and then getting that instant gratification of seeing it get clean — I love that," he says.

The basics:

  • 🚗 Exterior details at the shop · mobile interior detailing across the metro

  • Swirl + scratch correction, stain pulls, full interior reset
