The Ankeny Fire Department wants to inspect every business in town — and charge them for it. Last night, city council reviewed a proposed Annual Business License that would require every commercial occupancy in Ankeny to register, pay a fee, and open its doors to fire inspectors on a recurring schedule. Restaurants. Daycares. Your dentist's office. That gym you go to twice a year.

Meanwhile, the school board approved millions more for the Innovation Hub, ISU Women's Wrestling just snagged one of the best NAIA coaches in the country (he's from right here in Iowa), and your kids can bike to school with a police escort tomorrow. Let's roll. 🚲

🏛️ CITY COUNCIL RECAP — MAY 4, 2026

Last night's meeting was loaded. Here's what matters:

🔥 FIRE DEPARTMENT BUSINESS LICENSE PROPOSED

The big one. Fire Chief R. Vance Swisher presented a follow-up memo on a proposed Annual Business License for all commercial occupancies. Key details:

  • Every business in Ankeny would need an annual license — low risk ($100/yr), moderate risk ($150/yr), high risk ($300/yr), plus a $150 initial application fee

  • Businesses must provide 24/7 emergency contacts, hazardous materials info, access details, and fire protection system data

  • Low-risk businesses inspected every 2–3 years; moderate-risk annually; high-risk annually or more

  • Three-year rollout planned (FY27–FY29)

  • Net cost to the city: -$57K in year one, roughly break-even by year two, positive revenue by year three

No vote yet — this was a planning session follow-up. But if you own or operate a business in Ankeny, start paying attention now.

💰 $27.8 MILLION IN BONDS

Council directed the advertisement for sale of $20.855M in General Obligation Bonds (Series 2026A) and $6.965M in Water Revenue Bonds (Series 2026B). Translation: big infrastructure money is being raised.

🐱 NEW ANIMAL ORDINANCES

First readings of Ordinance 2257 (trapping and community cats) and Ordinance 2258 (animal protection and control). Two more readings required before they become law.

🩺 PEDIATRIC STROKE AWARENESS MONTH

Mayor Bentz proclaimed May 2026 as Pediatric Stroke Awareness Month — stroke is the 6th leading cause of death in children, and 50–85% of kids who have one face permanent disabilities.

🏫 SCHOOL BOARD RECAP — MAY 4, 2026

The Ankeny School Board also met last night:

  • FY27 Certified Budget approved after public hearing

  • Innovation Hub contracts continue rolling in: Katelman Steel ($5.5M for metals), Academy Roofing ($994K), Performance Contracting ($1.37M acoustical), Great Lakes Hotel Supply ($1.4M food service equipment)

  • Turn lane agreement with City of Ankeny + Snyder & Associates hired ($84,600) for N Ankeny Blvd southbound turn lane improvements

  • Board Treasurer Deb Farver Plumb appointed and sworn in

  • School Board Recognition Month and certified staff recognized

🤼 JAKE KADEL HIRED AT IOWA STATE

Iowa State Women's Wrestling just landed their first assistant coach — and he's a proven program builder.

Jake Kadel resigned from William Penn on Sunday after three dominant seasons: a 2026 Heart of America Conference title, a 2026 NAIA runner-up finish, nine individual National Champions, and back-to-back NAIA Coach of the Year honors.

He's joining head coach Alli St. John (hired April 16) as the Cyclones build their roster ahead of the 2027-28 debut season. For a brand-new program, hiring Kadel is a statement: Iowa State isn't just adding women's wrestling — they're coming for titles immediately.
