The Polls Got 2024 Wrong. This Doesn't.

Pundits predicted. Polls projected. Most of them missed. Prediction markets didn't.

Kalshi is where people put real money behind their political read — which means the prices you see on who wins the 2028 nomination aren't opinions. They're commitments. Right now, tens of millions of dollars are already trading on who gets the Republican and Democratic nominations.

That's a different signal than any poll you'll read this week.

Southbound I-35 between Ames and Ankeny disappears from the map for seven hours tonight — gone from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. while crews work an overhead bridge at 158th Avenue. If you're driving home late from Ames, the marked detour adds two counties to your trip. Let's roll. 🚲

🚧 The 15-mile gap on I-35 tonight

Iowa DOT is closing southbound I-35 from U.S. 30 (Exit 111) down to 126th Avenue (Exit 96) at 10 p.m. tonight until 5 a.m. Thursday morning, weather permitting. The reason is overhead bridge work at 158th Avenue, between Ames and Ankeny. That's a 15-mile stretch of interstate that simply isn't an option from late tonight until daybreak.

The marked detour: exit at U.S. 30, head west to U.S. 69, south on U.S. 69 to 126th Avenue, then east on 126th back to I-35. It tacks roughly 25 miles onto the trip, but on a Memorial-Day-week Wednesday night with thunderstorm chances stacking up, it beats trying to thread a closed lane.

One more thing — the southbound rest area at this stretch closes at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday morning) and stays closed until 5 a.m. Thursday. So if you usually stop there on a run north, build it into a different leg.

The state-track trophy behind the record. That all-time-Iowa SMR mark we covered yesterday was part of a bigger Hawks story — the Ankeny girls' Class 4A team finished third overall at the state meet with 67 points and brought home the trophy. The 1600m sprint medley quartet of Lena Bruening, Lilly Buckley, Morgan Fisher, and Makenna Madetzke ran 3:55.44, but the team trophy is the headline that didn't fit yesterday's column. Class of 2026, mark your Saturday. Graduation is Saturday, May 30. Ankeny High School commences at 10 a.m., and Ankeny Centennial walks at 2 p.m. The Ankeny Community School District is the source of record for venue and ticketing — check their graduation page before you head out, because the district's own pages currently list more than one venue and we'd rather you get the right one. 🌱 Local Business Spotlight: Going All In On The Side Gig

Most lawn-care companies in the metro have been around for a decade or three. NCA Lawncare & Landscaping just got here.

When Noah Abdelhadi got laid off from his full-time job earlier this year, he didn't look for another desk job — he went looking for more lawns. The mowing-and-landscaping side gig he was running on weekends is now his only gig. He runs it solo out of Ankeny after a recent move from Northern Iowa, which means a small-business owner in your neighborhood who picks up the phone himself.

If you've been quietly hating the company you signed up with in March, this is the kind of operator who's still building a customer base — and the kind who notices when a customer keeps him.

The basics:

  • 🌿 Solo-owned and operated · mobile mowing + landscaping across Ankeny

  • 📞 (540) 588-4901 · 📧 [email protected]

  • 🆕 New to the Ankeny market — moved from Northern Iowa, building local customer base now

⚡ Today's Takeaway

Two things to hold onto today: I-35 South vanishes between Ankeny and Ames from 10 p.m. tonight to 5 a.m. tomorrow — plan accordingly — and our Hawks girls didn't just set an all-time Iowa SMR record on Friday, they brought home a third-place team trophy with 67 points.

Tomorrow: Sips & Songs kicks off at The District Friday night (Peoples Band + Pork Tornados, free, all ages), and the Little White Schoolhouse throws a Last Day of School party with free ice cream and a magic show. We'll have the full weekend rundown.
