Defense Spending Is Surging. Here's Where It's Going.
Global defense budgets are expanding, but the allocation has changed. A growing share of spending is going toward AI-enabled systems, satellite networks, and advanced aerospace, not the platforms that dominated the last generation of procurement. We identified five companies at the center of this reallocation in a single research brief. Inside, you'll find the investment case for each, the contracts driving revenue, and the risks worth understanding before you commit capital. If you want exposure to defense sector growth beyond the traditional mega-caps, this report is a practical starting point. Free, concise, and built for investors who want to move ahead of the crowd.
First, the scoreboard: Hawks 3, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 1 — Ankeny's girls are state-bound. And the weekend is just getting started: the Centennial boys play for the 4A state championship at 2:30 this afternoon, and the Centennial girls take the field for their own regional final at 5:30 tonight. Let's roll. 🚲
⚽ The big one: Hawks punch their state ticket — and Ankeny could add two more trophies by sundown
The Ankeny Hawks (11-5-1) took down Cedar Rapids Kennedy (10-2-2) 3-1 in Thursday night's Class 3A Region 6 championship at the AHS Turf Field, jumping out to a 2-0 first-half lead and never letting Kennedy back in it. That's a state tournament berth — the girls' state tournament runs June 8-11 at the Lied Recreational Fields in Ames, with champions crowned June 13 at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
This afternoon, 2:30 p.m., Mediacom Stadium: Top-ranked Ankeny Centennial boys (after surviving Roosevelt 4-3 in overtime Wednesday) face No. 2 Waukee Northwest for the Class 4A state championship. Tickets are digital-only through the IHSAA.
Tonight, 5:30 p.m., Northview: The Centennial girls (14-2-1) host Cedar Rapids Prairie (9-5) in their Class 3A regional championship — win, and both Ankeny programs are in the state field next week.

🍽️ Weekend pick: Magee's Irish Pub & Eatery — brunch at 9:30, last call at 1
Here's the play this weekend: Magee's, the Irish pub at 1610 SW Main St. in The District at Prairie Trail. Scratch-made Irish fare and American favorites built on local ingredients — and the weekend schedule does the heavy lifting. Saturday and Sunday they open at 9:30 a.m. for brunch (regulars swear by the salmon over potato pancake), and Friday and Saturday nights they pour until 1 a.m.
The bonus move: tonight's Sips & Songs concert at The District explicitly welcomes takeout from District restaurants. Order at Magee's, carry it to the lawn, and you've got dinner and a show for the cost of dinner.
The basics:

🪑 Local Business Spotlight: Geoffrey's Adirondacks — the COVID project that wouldn't stay small
In 2020, Ankeny's Geoffrey Grimes needed "something creative and positive to focus on." So he started building Adirondack chairs — the oversized kind, the ones you sink into on a summer night and don't get out of until the fireflies show up.
Five years later, the hobby refuses to be a hobby. "What began as a simple project eventually grew into a real business through hard work, word of mouth, and community support," Grimes says. No storefront, no ad budget — just one Ankeny guy, a workshop, and chairs that keep getting ordered because neighbors keep seeing them in other neighbors' yards.

⚡ Today's Takeaway
A week that started with the council moving $26 million ends with Ankeny soccer chasing three trophies in 72 hours — the Hawks are already in, and two more games tip the weekend off today. Squeeze your outdoor plans into Saturday; Sunday belongs to the rain.
Monday: how the soccer weekend went — state final result, regional final result, and the girls' state tournament draw — plus the week ahead at City Council.
