Last night Ankeny City Council voted on $26.165 million in new debt and the Ankeny School Board took up $9.69 million in Innovation Hub construction contracts — same hour, two different rooms, three miles apart. The formal minutes will trickle out later this week, but the agendas give us the receipts already. Let's roll. 🚲

🏛️ The big one: What Council and the Board put on paper last night

City Council — $26.165M in bonds + three ordinances. On the council agenda at 5:30 p.m. inside Kirkendall's Council Chambers: the actual sale of $19,550,000 General Obligation Bonds, Series 2026A (Item 38.1) and $6,615,000 Water Revenue Bonds, Series 2026B (Item 38.2), each with paying-agent agreements and tax-exemption certificates. Third (final) consideration on Ordinance 2257 (Chapter 41 — trapping + community cats / TNR) and Ordinance 2258 (Chapter 55 — animal protection and control). First read on a fresh Chapter 31 amendment revising the Ankeny Human Rights Commission. A 100% voluntary annexation hearing on land off NW Ankeny requested by William Kimberley Development Corp., plus a related development agreement on the NW 18th St extension.

School Board — $9,687,325 in Innovation Hub subcontractor checks. Over at the Neveln District Office at 6 p.m., Old Business on the Ankeny Community School District agenda lined up five subcontractor agreements for the bond-funded Innovation Hub: Mid-American Glazing ($2,388,175 for glass + glazing), MPC Enterprises ($3,654,900 for precast concrete), Jordison Construction ($2,346,000 for concrete paving), Hilsabeck Schacht ($887,500 for fireproofing), and Jackson Agrobuilders ($410,750 for the greenhouse). That's the actual build of the project we covered when the bond authorization passed May 4 and when the city signed off on the traffic agreement last night.

We'll confirm vote tallies and any pulls once the minutes hit the portals later this week. If something got tabled or amended, you'll hear it from us first.

🌱 Local Business Spotlight: Central Iowa's Plant-Care SWAT Team

Plant Nannies is the central-Iowa plant-care service most people don't realize they need until they go on vacation and the fiddle-leaf fig stages a protest. Founder Blake Price runs it as a full-service operation — not just watering, but repotting and rehabbing struggling plants, designing indoor + outdoor displays, installing seasonal arrangements, and handling both residential and commercial clients across the metro.

The differentiator: most "plant services" stop at watering. Plant Nannies handles the whole lifecycle — diagnosing a sick monstera, redoing your office lobby, building a backyard container garden, or just keeping the houseplants alive while you're at the lake.

The basics:

  • 🏠 Mobile service across central Iowa · residential + commercial

  • 🛠️ Services: vacation watering, repotting + plant rehab, indoor + outdoor plant design, seasonal installations, ongoing maintenance

  • 📞 (315) 708-1996 · 📧 [email protected]

  • 🧑‍🌾 Owner: Blake Price
