🏛️ Council Recap: Bonds, Sewer Contracts, and a Rezoning Fight
Mayor Bobbi Bentz gaveled in the May 18 regular meeting with a Foster Care Month proclamation and a presentation from Metro Waste Authority CEO Michael McCoy. Then the real business started.
The big-ticket items:
$26.2M in bond sales. Council approved the sale of $19.55 million in General Obligation Bonds (Series 2026A) and $6.615 million in Water Revenue Bonds (Series 2026B). That's infrastructure money — roads, water systems, the capital plan that keeps a fast-growing city from falling behind its own growth.
$589,527 sewer lining contract. Public Hearing 2026-25 closed and council awarded the 2026 CIPP Lining Project to SAK Construction, LLC — under the $629,447 estimate. CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) is the trenchless method that rehabilitates aging sewers without tearing up your street. Fewer orange cones, same fix.
Rezoning: Meredith property goes multi-family. Public Hearing 2026-26 tackled a rezoning request on property owned by the Richard H. and Martha J. Meredith Revocable Trust — from R-1 (single-family) to R-3 (multi-family), capped at 12 units per acre with no apartments. Council accepted first consideration of Ordinance 2259. Two more readings to go.
Community cats get a second look. Ordinances 2257 (trapping/community cats) and 2258 (animal protection and control) both passed second consideration — amending Chapters 41.12 and 55 of the city code. One more vote and they're law.
69 consent agenda items sailed through, including preliminary approval for Trailside at Trestle Ridge Plat 1 (new street names: NW Cadence Lane, NW Trail Grove Lane, NW Path Lane), Piper Properties Plats 5 and 6, two snow plow truck purchases, an asphalt distributor, a Bravo Greater Des Moines arts grant, and final passage of ordinances updating stormwater fees, sewer charges, and temporary water service rates.
Coming June 1: public hearings on the Moeckly Farms annexation, Deer Creek Sanitary Trunk Sewer extension, and Hawkeye Tennis Court reconstruction.
Next up on tonight's civic calendar: Zoning Board of Adjustment at 5:00 PM, followed by Plan and Zoning Commission at 6:30 PM — both at Council Chambers.

🎓 School Board: Leadership Shuffle for 2026–27
The Ankeny Community School District board approved a wave of leadership appointments that take effect July 1. Here's who's moving where:
Mark Moss steps up to Chief Operating Officer, overseeing facilities, transportation, and safety. He's led Ashland Ridge Elementary since 2009. Dr. Jeffry Grassmeyer, who's been principal at Ankeny Centennial High School since 2024, becomes Director of Postsecondary Readiness — a new role focused on making sure every graduate is ready for what comes next.
On the building level: JD Hunter takes over as Centennial High School principal (he was at Northview Middle). Logan Maxwell moves from associate principal to principal at Northview Middle. And Mr. Muller, currently Director of Student Services, returns to the building as Ashland Ridge Elementary principal.
Translation: a lot of familiar faces in new chairs. If your kid’s school is on this list, expect a “meet the new principal” event before summer’s over.

🏗️ Innovation Hub: $9.3M in contracts. The board also approved a stack of construction contracts for the Ankeny Innovation Hub — the district's new career-and-technical-education facility. The big ones: Katelman Steel at $5.535M for structural steel, Academy Roofing at $994,300, Performance Contracting at $1.369M for insulation and sheathing, and Great Lakes Hotel Supply at $1.417M for food service equipment. A public hearing on re-bid packages was set for May 18. Separately, the board approved the FY27 Certified Budget unanimously and appointed Deb Farver Plumb as the new board treasurer.

🗣️ Local Business Spotlight: The Podiatrist Who Ditched Insurance
Dr. Jeffrey Olsen opened Foundation Foot Health Clinic seven months ago with a model most doctors won't touch — no insurance, direct pay only. The trade-off? Your first visit is a full hour with the doctor, X-rays included, instead of the seven-minute shuffle you're used to.
The clinic runs on a direct care model: you pay the practice, not your insurer. That sounds expensive until you do the math — Olsen says most patients with high-deductible plans end up paying less than they would through insurance. No billing department, no pre-auth runaround, lower overhead, lower fees.
What he treats: plantar fasciitis, heel pain, Achilles issues, fungal toenails, ingrown toenails — the stuff that quietly wrecks your day. Treatment options include custom orthotics, Remy Laser therapy, and Toe FX, all positioned as alternatives to steroid injections or surgery.
Olsen has been practicing podiatry since completing his residency in 2017. The clinic sits across from Hy-Vee on NW 5th Street.
