The High Trestle Trail has its own beer — and it's poured about five minutes from the trailhead. That's our weekend pick, and it anchors a Saturday you can spend entirely in Uptown: morning market, afternoon pint, and a shop full of Iowa makers in between. Let's roll. 🚲

When it all clicks.

🍺 Weekend pick: Firetrucker Brewery

Most taprooms name their beers after inside jokes. Firetrucker named its flagship after the thing half of Ankeny does on a Saturday morning: High Trestle IPA, after the trail itself. For a newsletter literally named Rolling with Ankeny, that's the pick.

The firefighter-themed brewery sits at 716 SW 3rd St in Uptown, with a big covered patio, a lounge, and yard games out back — the kind of place you settle into for an afternoon, not just a pour. The beer is brewed on site and now distributed statewide through Mahaska, so the lineup runs deep. Midweek there's free Music Bingo (Wednesdays, 7 p.m.) and Truckin' Trivia (Thursdays), but the weekend is the easy win: it opens early both days and stays open late.

Hours this weekend: Friday noon–11 p.m. · Saturday 11 a.m.–11 p.m. · Sunday noon–8 p.m. It's a short walk from Saturday's Uptown Farmers Market — make a day of it.

☀️ Weekend weather

Bank the sunshine early — Sunday's the washout.

  • Friday (Juneteenth): Mostly sunny, high near 80°. A stray evening storm is possible; low around 60°.

  • Saturday: Sunny, high near 81° — Pride and the market both look great. Only a slight storm chance overnight.

  • Sunday: Showers and thunderstorms, high near 70°. Indoor-plans day.

  • Monday: Drying out, mostly sunny, high near 74°.

⚽ World Cup: the host nations are rolling

Home soil is treating the hosts well. On Thursday, Canada hammered Qatar 6–0 and Mexico beat South Korea 1–0. The USA — fresh off a 4–1 opening win over Paraguay — is back on the pitch today: USA vs. Australia, 2 p.m. CT on FOX (Telemundo en español), from Lumen Field in Seattle. A win would put the Americans in strong shape to reach the knockout round. Good excuse to grab that Firetrucker patio seat.

🛍️ Local Business Spotlight: Uptown's "local makers under one roof"

Most gift shops stock the same wholesale catalog as everyone else. Tweedle Dee's built its whole identity on the opposite — a SW 3rd Street storefront filled with locally handcrafted goods from Iowa makers, with new arrivals landing weekly.

Owner Beth Snyder's shop is a browse-for-an-hour kind of place: handcrafted home decor, kitchen accessories, baby and kid gifts, self-care items, pet goods, a faith-based section, and an Iowa-themed corner. The approach has earned it the biggest social following of any business in our spotlight queue — roughly 11,000 Facebook followers. It's also a natural Saturday stop, sitting in the heart of Uptown a short walk from the morning farmers market (and that brewery up top).

The basics:

  • 🛍️ Locally handcrafted home decor, gifts, kitchen, baby/kid, self-care, pet, faith, and Iowa-themed goods

  • 📍 520 SW 3rd St, Uptown Ankeny · ☎️ (515) 421-0097

⚡ Today's Takeaway

It's a three-day weekend built for Uptown: a trail-named pint at Firetrucker, the farmers market and Ankeny Pride's fifth birthday on Saturday, and a shop full of Iowa makers in between — all under sunshine that holds until Sunday's storms.

Monday: how the long weekend went, plus the week ahead at City Council — including whether that Alleman–Elkhart ambulance vote finally makes the record.
