Fifty-seven Ankeny student-athletes just signed to play at the next level — and the guest speaker at Centennial's ceremony was a 2015 Jaguar who went on to become the Big East Player of the Year. Jaali Winters came back to tell the next generation what's ahead.
Meanwhile, a new barbershop just opened on S. Ankeny Blvd, the airport is rebuilding its runway, your tree branches have a free drop-off next weekend, and construction season is reshaping every interstate you drive. Let's roll. 🚲
🎓 COLLEGE SIGNING & ATHLETIC AWARDS NIGHT
Both Ankeny High School and Ankeny Centennial held their annual College Signing and Athletic Awards Night last week — and the numbers speak for themselves:
57 student-athletes moving on to compete at the collegiate level
Guest Speaker: Jaali Winters — 2015 Centennial graduate, all-time scoring leader at Centennial and Creighton, former Big East Player of the Year, and current professional volleyball player
IHSAA Bernie Saggau Award: Will Morris
IGHSAU Lisa Brinkmeyer Award: Nora Bockes
Ankeny Athletic Booster Club Gary Telford Scholarships: Kyler Jones and Kylee Patterson
AGSA Scholarship: Ava Faber, Jordyn Kennedy, Mackenzie Lane, Mady Ott, Ashley Sterling
This is what Ankeny does. It builds athletes — and then sends them out into the world with the tools to compete.

✈️ ANKENY REGIONAL AIRPORT: RUNWAY REBUILD & NEW HANGAR
The Polk County Aviation Authority met last Thursday and moved forward on major airport upgrades:
Runway 18/36 Reconstruction — Payment #1 of $369,649 approved for Manatt's construction services. This is the primary runway rebuild.
New Maintenance Storage Facility — Design and bidding services moving forward with McClure Engineering
New box hangar — Construction plans approved for a 5842, LLC hangar on Phase 3 of the box hangar development
Entrance roundabout & parking lot — Project accepted as complete ($14,811 final)
Ankeny's airport is a quiet economic engine. These investments don't make headlines, but they keep businesses landing here — literally.

🛴 RIDE SAFE 'N SMART: KNOW THE RULES BEFORE SUMMER
As more e-bikes and e-scooters show up on Ankeny streets and trails, the city and Ankeny Police are launching the Ride Safe 'n Smart campaign — a metro-wide education push before enforcement becomes necessary.
The City updated Chapter 76 on April 20. Here's what every rider (and parent) needs to know:
Trail speed limit: 20 mph max on sidewalks, trails and bike lanes (slower when crowded)
Pedestrians always have the right-of-way — on sidewalks, trails and crosswalks
Residential sidewalks: E-bikes and scooters allowed
Business districts (Uptown & The District): Must dismount and walk
City parks: E-scooters and low-speed e-bikes must stay on paved surfaces
E-motos: Street only. No sidewalks, trails, parks or green spaces. License required.
Six basics the campaign focuses on:
Ride right, pass left
Speak up before you pass ("On your left!")
Pedestrians always have the right-of-way
Slow down and stay in control
Look both ways
Be visible — lights required at night (white front, red rear, visible from 300 ft)
Sergeant Trevor McGraw told WHO13: "We're going to start with the educational piece... But right now, we want parents to help teach their kids these rules."
Nine metro cities are in this together: Ankeny, Clive, Des Moines, Grimes, Indianola, Norwalk, Urbandale, Waukee, and West Des Moines.
Talk to your kids before summer hits. Violations are enforceable as a simple misdemeanor.

⚡ KEY TAKEAWAY
Fifty-seven student-athletes just committed to compete beyond Ankeny — and a woman who did the same thing in 2015 came back to show them what that commitment looks like a decade later. The airport is rebuilding its runway. A 71,000-square-foot bank headquarters is cutting its ribbon. The DOT is reshaping every interstate in the metro. This city is building in every direction — up, out, and forward.
The decisions that shape your daily life don't announce themselves. They happen in a conference room at the airport, a school board meeting on a Monday night, or a ribbon cutting you drove past on the way home.
Now you've seen them.

Beautiful Ankeny’s sunsets!
